Does anyone out here feel the altitude, but still climb high? I've experienced alitude sickness at 13,000 feet before yet live at 3,500 feet. are there some ways of avoiding it while climbing. I'm looking at climbing an 17,000 foot peak. The thing is this... the only time I had altitude sickness was several years ago when I was about fifteen years old. I've traveled to around twelve thousand feet and spent several nights at that altitude and not felt sick. So, input appreciated! cool.gif

If had altitude sickness the last time I was in the Bugaboos. That's while I was between 9000 and 10000 feet elevation. It felt like I had an upset stomach. It?s weird, some times I suffer, some times I don?t. And I never could find out why.
I guess the only way to avoid this is gradual acclimatisation.

Ascending slowly is probably the best way to avoid AMS. Make sure you are drinking much (water is the best), and are not over exerting yourself. Do it by adding a few extra days for the approach if possible, drinking before you are thirsty and preparing by getting in shape before hitting the hill. Some climbers get sick, some don't. Some are well hydrated, in great shape and ascend slowly, yet still get sick. Don't know why but you have a much better chance of staying healthy if you use caution and pull out all your tricks before hand. You might look into Diamox or something like that that seems to help some people if you are particularly susceptible.
Good luck.

Were you in fact sick from the altitude? or just had a stomach and head ache that was made worse by physical exertion at altitude?
