The biggest city in the country and the capital. It is situated on St Mary's Island where the Gambia River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
The city was founded by the British in the 19th century. At first it was called Bathurst.
One of the main attraction is Arch 22, built to commemorate a bloodless military coup d'etat in which President Dawda Jawara was replaced by the country's present (and two times re-elected) President Yahya Jammeh. Another interesting thing to see is The African Heritage museum with a huge collection of local art and woodwork.
The main industry in Gambia is peanut processing, but in Banjul a lot things are exported on ships: palm wood, palm oil, bees? wax.
There are a few markets where various crafts and jewellery are sold.

Population: ca 500 000
