This was the capital of the Emperor Yohannes IV (1871-1889). Nowadays Makale is the most important town of Tigray, an Ethiopian region, which located far in the north. There is an interesting museum, with numerous exhibits of Emperor?s time and following history. Besides the museum building used to serve as the Emperor?s palace first. The town is also identified as a transit point for the camel caravans bringing salt up from the arid lands of the Dankal Depression. That is why the market place is a very attractive place to visit. Visitors can also make short trips into the Dankal area to take a look at some of the Afar nomads that move around the region.
There is an airport.
