Lalibela

A city in the mountains, about 320 north from Addis Ababa. It is one of the most important cities in Ethiopia, due to its religious aspect. It has a population of 15 000 people and most of them belong to Ethiopian Orthodox Christian Church.
It is famous for 11 churches sculpted in the monolith.
Lalibela used to be an Ethiopian king, who ruled the country in the 12th century. He spent some time in Jerusalem and in the Holy Land as a young man. When he came back, he decided to build and create a new Jerusalem. He loved reading the Bible, that is why a lot places near the city have Biblical names (like The River Jordan flowing through the city).
The first people from Europe to see the churches were the Portuguese. The churches are assembled in three groups: the northern one, the eastern one and the western one.
In the city there is an airport, a hospital, a few schools, a market.
