The city with a population of about 100 000. It is very crowded, but located beautifully among the hills. There are a few pleasant sights in city. The church of Bete Maryam is on top of one of the hills. There is also a gorgeous stand of juniper trees there preserved in the grounds of the church. The church itself is a tukul style, but the location is impressive. From the hilltop you get views over Dessie and over the valley to the South. The mountains which border Dessie on the North end is very appealing.
The nightclubs and Asmari bars of Dessie are well-known. Asmari artists, with their one stringed instruments, are unbelievably smart at creating lyrics.
