Travel Community Kaśka Glanc

One of the most important historical cities in Africa. It is located in Tigre region, about 500 km north-east of Addis Ababa, not far from Adwa mountains. It has a population of about 20 000. It is said that it used to be a seat of Queen Saba, who visited king Solomon in the 10th century BC. Ethiopian Orthodox Church says that the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum is a place, where the Biblical Ark of the Covenant was placed. Axum is thought to be the holiest city in the country and is a vital goal for a lot of pilgrimages. There are important religious celebrations at the T'imk'et Festival on 7th January and the Festival of Maryam Zion in late November.

The city is extremely attractive due to its rich history. You can see there:
1. The stelae; the biggest number are located in the Northern Stelae Park. They are supposed to mark graves.
2. St Mary of Zion church from1665.
3. Archaeological and Ethnographic Museums.
4. The Ezan Stone.
5. King Bazen's Tomb
6. The so-called Queen of Sheba's Bath.
7. Ta'akha Maryam and Dungur Palaces.
8. The monasteries of Abba Pentalewon and Abba Liqanos.
9. The Lioness of Gobedra rock art.
