It used to belong to the Ethiopians, Egyptians, Ottoman Turks, Italian and British. Massawa is a very diverse city. A lot civilizations have created its look - especially the architecture. It is a It is a popular tourist base if you enjoy coral reefs. The trip to the Dahlak Archipelago takes no more than 10 minutes. There are fantastic beaches and a lot of diving opportunities.
