Asmara- History
Kaśka GlancAsmara is very old. At first, it is said, there were four clans residing in the Asmara area on the Kebessa Plateau: the Gheza Gurtom, the Gheza Shelele, the Gheza Serenser and Gheza Asmae. The men united the clans and together they protected their country from the invaders. After the triumph, the place was give a new name, Arbaete Asmara which factually means the four are united.
Asmara was the capital city of colonial Eritrea in 1897. The city used to be the Italian colonial area: in its road and rail network, its structural design and some culinary habits. Asmara is by far the biggest city in Eritrea, and has a population of about 500,000. Asmara is located in the Eritrean highlands. Not like some other towns in Eritrea it is pretty unharmed. For thirty years of Ethiopian occupation, the city deteriorated, but it still is beautiful and unique. Since 1991 a fast improvement in infrastructure, building repairs and repainting has been noticed.
Safety
Kaśka GlancAsmara is probably the safest African capital for travellers. It is one of the cleanest cities in Africa. The streets are elegant, coffee-shops and restaurants remind of Italy.
What to see and visit
Kaśka GlancThe city is a pleasant combination of Italian colonial buildings and Eritrean structural design. Asmara's very mixed cultural legacy is clear: three of the most well-known places of interests in the city are, the Al Khulafa Al Rashiudin Mosque, the Catholic Cathedral and the Mariam Coptic Cathedral.
Very close to the Cathedral there is a very hectic market borough, with its stalls full of fruits and vegetables, spices, chickens and eggs, old furniture, ceramic objects, and garments. The city is the cleanest city in Africa. Asmara is definitely a must-see place.
