It is located in northern suburb of Cairo, on the Nile. It used to be a market town supplying the capital city with agricultural produce. In the 1820s Muhammad 'Ali built the country's first factories which were European-type and also schools and the town developed and flourished as an industrial city, or rather a far district of Cairo.
