It is a town and a port At the Mediterranean Sea, located Wright next the Suez Canal, about 170 km north-east from Cairo. Port Said was opened as a port in 1868, one year before opening the Suez Canal. It was named after the vice king Said. It soon became the biggest coal port in the world and the main residence of the service of the Canal. In 1956 the Canal was nationalized and the city was severely damaged due to a try of regaining the control over the area by the English and the French. Port Said had its hard times from 1967 to 1975, when the Canal was closed. But since 1975 is has been constantly flourishing. Nowadays there a duty free trade zone as well.
