El Minya

El Minya is often called the Bride of Upper Egypt. It is located about 250 km south of Cairo. It is also the capital of the province. There is not much historical to see here, but about 7 km outside the town there is a Muslim and Christian cemetery named Zawiyyet al-Mayyiteen (Place of the Dead) which is supposed to be one of the biggest cemeteries in the world. Other attractions worth seeing are two mosques: the El-Umra Mosque and the El-Lamati Mosque.
Sadly, Minya obtained a status for Islamic opposition to the Egyptian government. But it has always been a nice place to stop by.
