Aswan is the main journey centre of the southern Egypt. There are lot of things to see and to explore: Elephant island, the Philae Temple, the Aswan dam and Abu Simbel, which is located a little further.
Aswan and its surrounds were recognized as Nubia in ancient times. It is a little more African region than any other part of Egypt. The Nubian dancers are a very popular tourist attraction in the hotels, but you can see more in the Nubian Cultural centre.
The city is situated on the Nile. You can rest here, admire some mosques, but be prepared for an adventure. There is a bazaar, the Ferial Gardens and the Nubian Museum, the Cemetery, where there are tombs from the Fatimid period. Not far from the cemetery in the well-known quarries is the extremely large Unfinished Obelisk. And close to it there arte two Greco-Roman sarcophagi and an uncompleted colossus which remain half hidden in the sand.
