Assiut
Kaśka GlancAsiut is the biggest town in Upper Egypt and it is located about 400 km south of Cairo. It is an old city which was founded in the times of the pharaohs.
Nowadays Asiut is the administrative centre of the Upper Egypt province and has a huge Christian community. It is also a very important agricultural centre (cotton and grain). It has a few carpet manufactures as well. The third largest university in Egypt is also located here.
In addition to the ancient attractions there is also a Banana Island, which is a pleasant place to rest. And if you do like monuments you cannot miss the Necropolis of Assiut. Here, tombs of many local leaders can be found which portray the region?s historical meaning.
There are a few good hotels in the city as well as a YMCA.
