A town in the southern Egypt, close to the border to Sudan.
It is famous for two giant temples carved in sandstone. The were built for the Pharaoh Ramesses II (who ruled the country for 63 years in the 13th century BC) and for his wife Nefertari. Inside of one the temples there are 4 9-meter high monuments representing the pharaoh, who was an incarnation of Osiris ? lord of life beyond the grave. At the entrance to the temple there are four 20-meter high monuments of the sitting pharaoh. In the year 1964-68 when the Aswan Dam was being built, the temples were moved to the upper area. Nowadays they are located on the plateau, on the Lake Nasser.
