Mbuji-Mayi

It is a capital of Kasai Oriental province, located in south central Congo on the Sankuru River. A trade centre in Luba country, it handles the majority of the diamonds produced in the country. After the Congo gained independence the city's population grew quickly with the immigration of Luba people from all around the Congo. In years from 1960 to 1962 it was an administrative centre of the Mining State of South Kasai.
