Kisangani
Kaśka GlancIt was used to known as Stanleyville. It is a city with a population of about 560 000 and an administrative centre of Orientale province. It is also a port on the Congo River. It is situated on a rail line that skirts the Boyoma Falls (formerly known as Stanleys Falls). Metal goods, beer, cotton and rice are sent from the city further to Africa. There is a big airport.
History:
The city was founded by Henry Stanley and at first it was situated on an island in the river. The city used to serve as a stronghold for Patrice Lumumba in the late 1950s.
What to see and visit
Kisangani has university grounds of the National University of the Congo and a fine museum. The Boyoma Falls are worth seeing. Thanks to them it is a very tourist place in the country nowadays.
