A town founded in 1894 by Hermann von Wissmann as Luluabourg . It is located 750 km west from Tanganyika Lake. It is a capital of the Luba people. Thanks to the location close to the Lulua River and a railway between Lubumbashi and Ilebo it has become an important commercial centre. It has a population of about 940 000. I is also the transportation centre of a region where diamonds are mined.
