It is a town, where Felix Houphouet-Boigny was born. He was a president of the country since Ivory Coast became independent in 1960 until 1993. The city is located in the centre of the country, about 20 km north-west from Abidjan. In 1983 the government made the city the capital, instead of Abidjan. New governmental buildings were built and all the ministries were moved in 1984. Although the country is very poor, the new capital was given luxurious palaces and offices. In 1990 a new cathedral was built. It is the largest Christian church in the whole Africa and its architecture follows the Basilica in Rome.
The city has a population of 130 000.
