It is a town in the central part of the Ivory Coast and an administrative centre of Bouake Department. It has a population of about 460 000. It is situated on a flat terrain. It also functions as an economical centre for a region. Cotton, coffee, cocoa and palm products are manufactured here.
The city was founded by the French in 1890s. Prior to that it used to serve as a big and popular slave trade market.
