It is an old name for Nzwami Island of the Comoros Archipelago. It is one of the three island of the archipelago which gained independence in 1975. The fourth one called Majotta remained French.
Comoros are volcanic island on the Indian Ocean. They are located between Madagascar and Mozambique. A lot of ethnic groups have always come here. People from Persia, Africa, Arabia. Due to this fact present inhabitants are a fascinating mix of different cultures, customs and religions. In the 19th century France started ruling here, but Comoros were always underappreciated by the French government.
After gaining political independence the situation in the country is very uncertain. There have been assassinations of the politicians and coup d?etats. The government is still fighting the problems of unemployment and illiteracy.
All the three islands have fine beaches.
