Douala is located on the Wouri River, 24km from the sea and it is the biggest city of Cameroon. It is not very picturesque, but the Akwa district is lively enough and has rather good quality African restaurants.
Douala is not the capital of Cameroon, but the most important city by (population and economics). The town was almost certainly named after the Duala, a black African tribe that initially resided in the region. Douala has an airport, wide docks and a railway station. Industries comprise the production of aluminium products, beer, textiles, and the processing of wood and cacao beans.
What to see and visit
The main attraction in town is the Hotel Akwa Palace. To sit on the veranda and have coffee is the most excellent way to spend some free time. The Musee de Doula is in the Hotel de Ville on the second floor. It shows Bamoun and Bamileke art.Nera the Museum is the Governors Palace with a famous Chinese Pagoda, designed and built by Rudlof Douala Manga Bell, a local monarch who was executed by the Germans in 1914.
