Bobo-Dioulasso is a city of about 400,000 and after Ouagadougou it is the second largest in Burkina Faso. It is situated in the south-western part of the country, in the Houet province. It is a very important place for both the economics and the culture of that area. Bobo is the centre of traditional music of Burkina Faso. The name contains two words: 2 ethnic groups that reside in the city: the Bobo and the Dioula. It is located by the Houët River. Bobo was founded originally as Sya in the 15th century. The city was taken by the French in 1897.
What to see and visit
The main attractions of the city are: the Old Mosque, built in 1880, the fifteenth century Konsa house and a holy fishpond. There is also a museum, a zoo and a great pottery market.
