Ghanzi, Botswana

Ghanzi is also known as "The capital of the Kalahari" and it is one of Botswanas most fascinating towns. It is situated in the eastern part of the country and isolated from the rest of the world by hundreds of kilometres of road. For the most part the terrain is flat and featureless, with some bushes, thorn trees and grasslands. In summer it is extremely hot. Ghanzi society is a mix of ethnic groups - Bushmen, Bakgalagadi, Baherero, and Afrikaaners who possess many of the farms. Afrikaans is a very popular language.

History
Some time ago, parts of this huge area were inhabited only by Bushmen who had created strategies for surviving in this unfriendly land. Later the Bakgalagadi came and nowadays reside in Kalahari villages such as Ncojane and Kang. The first white settlers came in 1874. More of them arrived in the1890s. These were trekkers who wanted to escape the authorities in South Africa, believing they could found a sovereign republic. Newcomers in the 1900s were dedicated to cattle ranching. By 1936 there were already over 40 farms. Today there are over 200 cattle farms.

What to see and visit
Ghanzi is a perfect place for a safari trip. Ghanzi offers the occasion to experience
the Bushman culture and take part in their hunting and gathering.
