It is a sea port located abort 700kk south from Luanda. It is an administrative centre of Namibe province. The city was founded by the Portuguese in 1849, and soon developed into a fishing port and trade point. At the beginning of the 20th century the railway between Namibe and the city of Menongue was built. Namibe province is situated at the seaside and at the bottom of Sierra da Chela mountains, which are 2100 m high.
