It used to be known as S?o Salvador, when it served as the capital city of the Kongo kingdom from the 16th till 18th century. It was renamed by the Portuguese, who built a cathedral there in 1534. It is a town in north-western Angola. It is located on a low plateau about 160km southeast of Nóqui, which is the closest point on the Congo River.
