It is the capital and the biggest city in Angola. It is located In north-western part of the country on the Atlantic coast. It has about 2,7 million inhabitants. It is the biggest economical and cultural centre if Angola. There is a huge port and an airport. In the neighbourhood of Luanda there are huge oil fields.
History
Luanda was founded by the Portuguese colonialists In 1576. It was named Sao Paulo de Luanda then. In the 17th and 18th centuries it used to be a very important trade centre. The main trade branch was selling the slaves. Since 1975 it has been Angolan capital city.
What to see and visit
In the architecture of the city low houses and buildings are predominant, but there are a few glass skyscrapers and hotels in the city centre. There is a university founded in 1976 and some interesting museums: Museum of Natural History and Museum of Anthropology. A nice attraction is a Portuguese stronghold from the 17th century called Sao Miguel.
