A town in central Angola founded in 1890. It is the main trade and market centre of the Bié Pronince and its main industry is processing grains (rice, coffee) and beeswax. The town has been badly damaged in the civil war.
History
Modern history of Kuito is very tragic. In 1992 the city was completely destroyed by local guerrillas, and since 1998 over 100 000 people have fled conflict and looked for an asylum in Kuito. So the population is now twice as big as it used to be 10 years ago ? about 300 000 people. A very high level of military activity is noticed there and visiting Kuito may be extremely dangerous, because it is the heaviest mined city in central Angola.
