History
These regions attracted colonialists from France, Holland, Germany and Portugal in the 18th and 19th century. Cabinda was established as a political unit in 1885. The treaty assured Portuguese protection over the people and allowed the colonial expansion in the Congo Basin. In the 1930s, the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar wanted a tighter control over Portugal?s overseas possessions. Angola was made a Portuguese province and Cabinda a part of Angola. That was where the trouble started. Many other European colonialists wanted to guarantee the independence to their colonies in the 1960s, but not Portugal. This was the reason to a lot of upheavals. (National Front for the Liberation of Angola , the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola began their work at the time). The Front for the Liberation of the Cabinda Enclave wanted the independence of Cabinda They succeeded partly and Cabinda has other rights than any other Angolan city or territory. The situation with FLCE guerrillas is still unfinished, because a lot them still fight for the complete freedom and independence of Cabinda.
