Benguela, Angola
General
It is a city on the eastern coast of the country and the capital of Benguela province.
Violence & thefts
The security situation in Angola has improved noticeably since the end of the civil war. However all the tourists should be very careful - travelling throughout Angola is problematic due to banditry and land mines. Common checkpoints and poor infrastructure make travel on roads unsafe outside the cities. Police and military officials are sometimes out of control, and their authority should not be challenged. Travelling by day is highly recommended. Throughout Angola, taking photographs of places and buildings perceived as military, including government buildings, may result in arrest or fines.
What to see and visit
The city itself is very dosaponting, but there are many beautiful beaches, including Caota and Caotinha, Baia Azul and Baia Farta. They are perfect for sport fishing and scuba diving.
History
The Portuguese founded Benguela in early 1600s. They were attracted to the area by tales of abundant silver and copper mines. By the t19th and 20th century the colonization started bringing profits. Trade with dried fish, ivory, waxes and rubber was the most important branch of the industry for a long time. Over time Benguela began to be considered the most significant business-related harbor after Luanda. After the Second World War the region turned to fishing. The Benguela coast was a real sea El Dorado for fishermen. Sea workers from Portugal began settling in the area.
