General
It is a city in north-central Algeria. It has a population of about 160,000 inhabitants. It is situated at the bottom of Gezoul Mountain (1,050 metres above then sea level) It is a capital of Tiaret province.
Tiaret is mainly an agricultural city.(cereals, livestock raising). But it is famous for purebred Arabian horses.
Tiaret has very good road and rail connections with other cities.

What to see and what to visit
There is a great Byzantine citadel. Not far from the town there are some remarkable step pyramids with square foundations, called Djedar. These most likely served as tombs for Christian Berber princes in the 6th and 7th centuries.
Tiaret has also a university centre.

History
It was a very important urban centre during the Roman times. Its history started in the 4th century, when it became the capitol city of the Byzanthine province, but soon it was turned into a Berber kingdom. In the 7th century it was dominated by the Arabs. In 761 Abu r-Rahman made it into the capital of Ibadi kingdom. But soon the Fatimids reached their hand for the city. In the 13th century it was incorporated into the Berber Zianid dynasty, who abandoned the city after the Ottomans had attacked it in the 16th century. The French came in 1843 and 20 years after that they created their own French town here.
