Tebessa, Algeria

General
It is a city in north-eastern Algeria with about 170,000 inhabitants. It is situated 20 km from the border to Tunisia It is also the capital of Tebessa province. Tebessa is famous for phosphate mining, trade in sheep, esparto grass, and grain. There is also a well developed carpet industry.
Tebessa is has very good road and rail connections with other towns.

What to see and what to visit
There is a huge Byzantine citadel from the 5th century, with 12 towers and 4 gateways. There is also a 3rd century Roman arch and a gorgeous Christian basilica. Not to mention well preserved Roman amphitheatre ruins, Roman thermal baths and a temple devoted to Minerva.

History
In the 7th century BC it was a Carthaginian colony. In 146 it was conquered by the Romans who named it Theveste. The Arab invasion in the 7th century devasted the city and it was turned into a small village. In the 16ty century the Ottomans created a military base there and the French 200 years late turned Tebessa into the gateway town for Sahara.
