General
Hassi Messaoud means ?blessed well?. It is a town in eastern Algeria. It used to serve only as a watering hole in the Sahara desert, but in 1956 oil was discovered here. In 1979, oil refining expanded greatly. A refinery is situated in the city and pipelines carry oil to main Algerian towns. More than half of Algeria's oil production comes from this field.
