History
The history of Constantine has ancient roots. It was founded by the Carthaginians and named Cirta. In Roman times it became one of the riches cities in Africa, thanks to a major grain-shipping point. It is said that the city was a centre of Numidia- a great Berber empire. In the 5th century the city was devastated by some Vandal tribes but it was rebuilt. Most of the Muslim dynasties wanted to have Constantine within their area. The Turks attacked the city in the 16th century. In 1837 the French came and 11yeras later they incorporated Constantine into the colony. Nowadays Constantine is a seat of a Roman Catholic Bishop, a university and a Muslim school of higher education.
