General
If you are in Algeria but still miss the European atmosphere ? go to Annaba. It is a sea port and the centre of one of Algeria?s most fertile regions. It was a very popular place among the French colonialists.. It has about 500,000 inhabitants. It is located in the north-eastern corner of the country, on the Mediterranean Sea, and near the river Wadi Seybouse. It is 100 km west from Tunisia. It is the capital of Annaba province.

History
Annaba was initially settled by Phoenicians as Hippo Regius and joined Carthage in its plans. Under Roman rule Hippo Regius flourished commercially. It was also a centre for Christianity until it was sacked by Vandals in the 5th century. The Byzantines conquered the city and rebuilt it during the 6th century. Following the Arab raid of the 7th century, the city of Annaba was built some 2km from Hippo Regius, which was soon abandoned.

What to see and what to visit
Today Annaba is still a very European city. The main street, the Cours de la R?volution has a lively afternoon and early evening life. It has a large number of monuments from different epochs. One of the main sights in town is astonishingly enough a Basilica - the basilica of St. Augustine. There are a lot of ancient ruins.
