History
In the ancient times Algiers was called Icosium. The city was completely destroyed in VII century, after it had been conquered by the Arabian. At the beginning of XVI century it was ruled by Turkish pirates and became the main pirate centre at the Mediterranean Sea. In 1518 it was incorporated into the Turkish Empire. The French wanted to take control over the city since XVII century, but they didn?t succeed until 1830. During world War II Algiers was a capital city of free France and Charles De Gaulle?s government resided there. After Algeria had gained its independence, Algiers was chosen to be the capital city.

Violence & thefts
Though the level of terrorist attacks in Algeria is lower than in recent years, random attacks keep on taking place in crowded urban areas, in rural villages and roadsides, and on public transport. To avoid tragic situations reduce the use of regularly scheduled commercial flights, be accompanied by pre-arranged local contacts upon arrival and departure at airports, and have armed security while travelling overland. Nighttime travel outside the central urban areas should be avoided. Visitors to the capital of Algiers should live only in one of the several large, internationally accepted hotels where security is provided. ________________________________________
What to see and what to visit
Algiers is a typical Arabic town. There are a lot beautiful mosques. You should see especially The Great Mosque with a fine minaret (14th century), a mosque called Sidi Abdarrahmana and another one called Jami el ? Jabib. There is also a stunning Turkish citadel built in the 16th century. Two palaces should be put to your attention ? the Governor?s Palace and the d'Archeveche Palace. St. Philip?s Cathedral - a catholic one - is an architectural jewel from the 19th century . The main street is former Boulevard de la Republigue.
