Elmina
Kaśka GlancElmina is a small harbour town on the Cape Coast. It used to be a Portuguese colony and was built in 1482. It was named for the gold mines and had the first European fort built in Ghana, called Fort S?o Jorge da Mina or St. George's Castle. St. George's was the earliest European fort built in Ghana, in fact, and one of the numerous slave factories, trading posts built for the rewarding slave trade on the west coast of Africa. Elmina is alsoa place where we can find Fort St Jago (built by the Dutch in mid 1660s), a few Asafo shrines and a nice lagoon. Today, Elmina's most important industry is fishing.
It is a special little town.
Population: ca 20 000
