Bangui is the main city in Central African Republic. It has a population of about 690 000.It is also a cultural, political and economic centre of the country. The city is located in the south-western part of the country, at the Ubangi river. The River is a natural border between the Central African Republic and The Republic of Congo. The industry comprises mostly the textile branches, breweries, diamonds and timber.
History
The city was founded in 1889 as an administrative point for the French colonialists. It remained the main city, even after gaining the independence of the Republic in 1960.
What to see and visit
Typical for Bangui are wide streets and the city centre which is called Place de la Republique. There is a triumphal arch of the former king Bokassa. There is a great marketplace and the Avenue Boganda.
