Ouidah, Benin


Ouidah is a town which might be interesting for a lot of different reasons. It is a port located about 40 km from Kotonu and it has a population of about 82 000.

History
Probably it was founded In the 17th century. It soon became a very important place in the slave trade. In 1727 it was conquered by a king Agdja, who ruled the kingdom of Dahomey.
Nowadays it is centre of voodoo culture and religion. In the city centre there is a market where you can buy some voodoo dolls, monkeys heads, tails of lizards, bats and other goods.

What to see and visit
First of there is The Temple of Pythons and the Holy Forest wild park with ruins of a house. It said the ghost of the owner still lives there. For historians there is also The Salve Road to see a 4 km road which used to be the last one for thousands of African slaves.
