Kotonu is a seat of the government of the Republic of Benin. It is an administrative centre of Atlantique Province near the Guinean Bay. It has a population of 700 000. It is located north the Couta Canal which links the Nokoue Lake with the open sea. It is also the main fishing port in the country. Industry is well developed (palm oil, beer, beverages, soap, furniture).
The city was built by the French at the beginning of the 20th century. Today there are numerous hotels, restaurants and a few markets which offer goods from all over the country.
What to see and visit
Kotonu is famous for excellent, clean beaches but unfortunately swimming in the sea in this area is extremely dangerous due to very strong sea currents.
