An administrative centre of the Lamu Island. Lamu is charming. This is Kenya's oldest town and it has retained all the character of the old times. The major means of transport are donkeys since there are no cars. People are nice and friendly. Do not miss the intricately carved wooden doors and lintels which have made the island a well-known place. The island has a long history and by the 16th century it was a successful port, exporting ivory, amber, spices, timber and slaves. When the Portuguese came, it surrendered immediately and in the 19th century it became an area under discussion of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, which technically controlled the coast until Kenya gained independence in 1963.
Lamu is rigorously Islamic, so be aware of the way you dress.
