Kumasi
Kaśka GlancKumasi is situated in the Rain Forest region of Ghana and is commonly known as The Garden City because of a variety of species of plants.
It is the capital of the Ashanti Region and the second biggest city in the country.
The city is situated on the Busumtwe River, which flowsinto the Atlantic Ocean. While territory adjacent to Kumasi is quite flat, the rural area is flourishing with tropical vegetation.
Trade, farming and mining are leading industries in Kumasi. Additionally, its region is famous for a rich and important cultural heritage mainly apparent in minor villages. Cocoa and hardwood of very high quality are most important exports.
Kumasi is home to many educational institutions, for example the University of Science and Technology. What is interesting - English is the official language of Kumasi.
Kumasi was founded at the beginning of the19th century by King Osei Tutu. The king gave the name to the city after the KUM tree, which he planted as a sign of triumph for the Ashanti Empire over the British.
Nowadays Kumasi is a fast-growing, modern city. Local sports enthusiasts are particularly proud of their soccer team, the Kumasi Asanti Kotoko.
